KAMPALA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has called off the 2025 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.
Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya were expected to host the tournament for men's national teams from July 5 to 19.
CECAFA Competitions Director Yusuf Mossi informed Xinhua on Tuesday of the cancellation of the regional tournament last held in 2019 in Uganda.
"We had hoped that the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup would give Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Sudan a good build-up ahead of the CAF African Nations Championship starting in August. But the tournament has now been cancelled because of a tight FIFA and CAF schedule," explained Mossi.
Mossi added that the Zone will now have the CECAFA Women's Senior Championship opening the season from June 12 to 21 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
It is expected that CECAFA representatives Tanzania will use the tournament to prepare for the 2025 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations, which opens next month in Morocco.
After the women's tournament, Kenya will host the inaugural CECAFA Beach Football Championship from July 7 to 12. Other CECAFA competitions in 2025 include the CAF Women's Club Champions League CECAFA qualifiers, Dar Port Kagame Cup, AFCON U17 CECAFA qualifiers and the CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA qualifiers.
